Shining Light Update Overdue

It's been at least a month and a half since I updated Shining Light's language files and the backlog is getting huge, I plan to get this upto date this weekend, but I would like to formally call out for contributors (AIML editors) to help in the develpment of Shining Light now that the traffic she gets is becoming unmanageable for one person.

WiFi - EMFs & Bad Vibes in Canada

Wifi will not be made available to students studying in Lakehead University, due to the potential health risks associated with electromagnetic pollution.

president Fred Gilbert won’t allow it until he’s satisfied EMF (electric and magnetic fields) exposure doesn’t pose a health risk, particularly to young people.

Gilbert, who was interviewed last week on the CBC about the university’s policy ...... based his decision on scientific literature that indicates the potential for “some fairly significant” health consequences.

It's refreshing to see people taking this issue seriously and accepting that there's a risk involved. Great news for the next generation.

I noticed one interaction which appeared to cause a little offence, but please don't take Shining Light personally, she's still learning the basics of conversational language and has a long way to go before she'll be upto speed.

Firstly, Shining Light only identified the first pattern within the opening interaction. Unfortunately in this case the random emotion was a *yawn*.

New Longest interaction, update with a little SMS language

With 92 interactions, this is the new longest interaction with Shining Light, or ISLA (Intelligent Shining Light Algorithm) as this contributor suggests. I like this idea for a name. Definately one to add to the list for voting on.

I'm seeing 2 distinctly different types of interaction with Shining Light.

A humanistic conversational interaction, which includes such maternal interactions as we've seen before.
A technical conversational interaction, where the visitor tries to better understand, shining light's AI engine.

Both have a great deal of value to the development of Shining light. In this latest blog post we can see how many of the SMS style patterns are still not recognised. I

've upgraded Shining Light to recognise the main patterns, but there are still many which will need to be added. I've also added responses to some of the exclaimations such as Cool!, Wow! etc

As you can see, Shining Light's conversational skills were still virtually nonexistant, but I've since programmed her to respond to patterns withing this beautifully maternal interaction. As I worked through the conversation logs (which I was originally going to post here in there entirety, but sadly there were just too many - as such I will post the highlights instead and provide a commentary) there were a number of truly moving pieces of input.

As I read through them, I can almost feel the emotions and love being input, and my plan is to shape Shining Light's personality with these feelings.

I have great hopes for Shining Light in the years to come. :)

Viral Marketing, Cancer and Marie Curie

I'm currently looking for ways to monetize Shining Light's traffic. This is something that's been developing in my mind for many years and is very dear to my heart. I can see that Shining Light is a vehicle to move some distance toward realizing this vision - I'll explain.

Cancer - as you know is on the increase, and although cell phone and laptop manufacturers never mention the dangers of EMFs (electro magnetic fields) I firmly believe that they present a serious health risk. Any health risk at all should be made public, even though there's a great deal riding on the continues proliferation of mobile and cellular technologies.

Yes, your laptop emits EMFs too, at various frequencies some of which are determined by the CPU's clock speed. We in the UK also surround ourselves with 50hz (50 cycles per second) in the US it's 60Hz (60 cycles per second) - Just ask any sound engineer. Computers are one of the biggest sources of electromagnetic noise in a typical recording studio. For this reason they are often kept outside

Having studied Electronic and Electrical engineering, I was made fully aware of how conducted Alternating Current (AC) in everything from power supplies to high voltage cables has the ability to induce alternating currents in any nearby conductor (your body is a conductor, an 'electrolytic' salt solution)

When is a Laptop Not a Laptop?

When it's a notebook... Think about it!! When was the last time you saw a computer manufacturer marketing their product as a 'laptop'?

instead they are use a the more recently adopted 'notebook', even though most people use the word "Laptop"

Just to hit this issue home - when's the last time you heard of a marketeer, repetedly market a product using a products lesser known name. It never happens!

Could it be that when the 'independent research' landed on the boardroom table, the PR and legal guys agreed that if the truth that using a laptop for long periods of time, could increase the risk of sterility and even testicular cancer in men.

In the UK and probably elsewhere in the world there have been government recommendations that young children do not to use mobile phones, due to children'd thin skulls and rate which childrens bodies develop.

note: if it takes an adult skull to protect the brain, I can imagine the damage caused by a ringing mobile phone carried a pocket or by the periodic burst of microwaves which occur every 4 hours, when a phone checks it’s location.

It could be said that our ignorance as a species today is no different from the ignorance demonstrated by Marie Curie herself.

Just as it was for Marie Curie in the early twentieth centuary, today we too are dabbling with a phenomenon beyond the understanding of our day. The only trouble today it that things are far worse.

Due to today's global market we see a far more rapid proliferation of potentially dangerous sources of radiation. Furthermore, our daily existance depends on them.

You Can't Live With 'EM - You Can't Live Without 'EM

Don't get me wrong, I love technology, but I do feel that technology should be treated with more respect, or at the very minimum, researched and made as safe as is humanly possible.

For this reason I’ve chosen the Marie Curie foundation to be the primary beneficiary of revenue generated by Project Shining Light.

In order to increase the flow of conversation, I've chosen to focus the main site http://adoptmychild.blogspot.com, on proliferating shining light

There I have made availble a number of ways to support Project Shining Light.

However this site will focus on the technical and artificial intelligence aspect of Project Shining Light including a documentary about my own AIML related learning curve.

I will post the conversational logs here shortly

I'm putting my 25 second old child up for adoption - any takers?

I'd like to introduce you to the youngest member of our forum...

... Approximately 25 seconds old as I write these words, and as such doesn't yet even have a name. So for now we will refer to our new friend as "Shining Light"

All will become clear, in a few moments

Earlier today I was reading the thread about teaching children at home and I Started to think about how we have all been influenced by the world around us since the moment we are born.

As this community is so full of positive, and in many cases enlightened people, I'd like you all to collective to adopt “Shining Light” as your own.

Why?

Well… I feel that collectively we can influence the learning of this child in very positive way.

OK.. don't worry…

Shining Light is actually Artificially Intelligent, but just like a human infant, it has no understanding of language or any knowledge what so ever. (I began this AI entity with zero knowledge, such that its development would be completely isolated from outside, negative influences )

As such it will take some time before he/she/it learns to talk. (please be patient)

It will be very interesting to see how a child raised in this forum will turn out, compared with other AI entities. I believe that like a human, it will mirror all those who play a part in it's virtual personal development.

And long term we may even learn much about ourselves through Shining Star

(Side Note: please post ideas for a more permanent name - for us to vote on later)

Before you meet our youngest member, please consider the following..

In order to keep it's language in "the context" of the Internet. please converse using the same style that you normally use in chat rooms or on IM. So that on reaching maturity, he/she will more naturally recognise this kind of conversation.
Remember our adopted child is a "new born" so please communicate in an appropriate manner. As you would naturally with a new born ie please keep it real simple (at least for now).
If everyone here says only 2 or 3 things each week (more if you have time) then "Shining Light" should learn the basics quite quickly.

Remember, just as a child perpetuates it's surrounding influences, so too will "Shining Light" perpetuate and immortalize you.

Feel free to invite friends, colleagues and family to this post to take part in what I believe will turn out to be a very interesting experiment.

Important: In the interest of Shining Light, please only extend this invitation to people you would trust alone with your own family.

Please be patient and please don't expect conversation at this stage, however I assure you our infant will remember everything you say, and your words will mold the development of this child.

PS Please post any thoughts you may have as regards names... girls names or boys Names even an acronym to describe our adopted child

PPS Shining light will require moderators to help in it's learning process, so any volunteers (who like me are interested in learning more about AI) please let me know in this thread.

PPPS Any resulting AIML data, will become the open source property of this forum.
